The 1st Theme: Money
In March 2007, a Chinese stock market crash caused global panic, highlighting China’s economic maturity. At the same time, China’s National People’s Congress focused on public welfare and wealth disparity, reflecting a need to address wealth distribution and societal values after decades of growth.
In the 1980s, economic policies and the rise of the Four Asian Tigers led to unprecedented capital accumulation in the Chinese community. “Money” became central, reversing traditional social hierarchies. Twenty years later, with significant international investment, the accumulation and consumption of money in Chinese society reached new heights, making catching up with Western economies achievable.
Generational views on wealth evolved: from “money is saved” to “money is earned” to “money is borrowed”; from “money is to be saved” to “money is to be repaid” to “money is to be spent.” These shifts created a complex financial landscape.
Who gives money? Who receives money? Who has money? Who lacks money? Who saves money? Who spends money? Who donates money? Who exploits money? Who shares money? Who steals money?
Money is a tool for wealth exchange, power, love, beauty, freedom, happiness, success, self-esteem, and future security.
In 2007, let’s explore money through words, images, videos, and discussions: Consider its value, observe its trends, trace its flow, witness its impact, and document its stories.
